Martinsound Martech MSS-10 at Palm Studio Support

Recived some wonderfull suport from Doug Osboren on the Martech MSS-10: Why can't they all be like Doug?
Victor,

I think all music should have some dynamic range, and some bounce. Unless
there is just too much range (you can't hear the quiet parts and the loud
parts cause distortion), your recorded music will have more life to it than
similar music with less dynamic range.

+3 for peaks on a VU meter seems fine.

Dear Victor,

Thank you again for choosing our MSS-10.

If you are recording to 24(or more)-bit digital, you shouldn't have to
worry about the recording level other than to avoid digital
distortion.
This is
reached at -0 dBFS on your digital recorder. 0 VU on the MSS-10 should
display as -18 on your digital recorder, allowing room for dynamic
peaks that don't go over your digital recorder's limits.

If you are recording to analog tape, not only will you have to worry
about distortion from too much signal (although analog tape distortion
typically is not as bad-sounding as digital distortion), but you will
have to make sure that the tape noise does not mask the low-level
details you are recording (not a problem with digital recording in
general).

The MSS-10 is a great device to use to record acoustic guitar, since
it is extremely quiet and clean. If you want to limit the dynamic
range of what you are capturing with the MSS-10, a compressor can keep
you from overloading the recording device and bring up the inner
dynamics. A hardware compressor (we do not offer one yet, but there
are many fine units out
there) can sound great, but it will permanently alter the dynamics of
the performance (not always a bad thing). A software compressor can
allow you to fine-tune the dynamics of your recording during mixdown.

What does Ottmar Leibert use for dynamic control? There are many great
books and resources to learn about recording technology. I've learned
much from more-experienced engineers by attending their sessions, and
applying their practice.

Good luck, and please contact me with any questions.
