Redeeming the Thorns

Redeeming the Thorns; Staying Close to Gods Heart By Victor Tarassov, MS Have you ever wondered why we sometimes just can’t seem to overcome our battles by shear will power? We do the same things over and over even though we don’t want to. I know I have been wrestling with that question. It is hard if not impossible to overcome or deal with a thorn by yourself. And I think I am finally coming to grips with the fact that the Christian’s life is totally impossible to live unless… Keep reading. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians in chapter 12:7-10 NIV describe the thorn that he has, he asks the Lord to remove it three times, (how many times have we asked) and yet the answer Paul is given is "My grace is sufficient for you, my power is made perfect in weakness" v.9 Humm. That goes against every addict’s or persons thinking in recovery that wants to be self-sufficient or do it in their own way. Actually there is an implication here that says we may have thorns in our life, but the Lord may chose not to remove them but give us the grace to deal with them. I have struggled with loneliness, depression and other struggles. I have asked the Lord to remove them but what I am finding is that these thorns can be an invitation and gift from the Lord for intimacy and deep fellowship. I believe that this is true and when I don’t go to Him I lose life. Maybe some of us need to reconsider the thorns in our life and see them not as a curse but a gift to make us dependent on the Lord and a call to intimacy with Him. I know that I have had to come to this place even with all I know, my education, experience, etc. I still cannot overcome my pride and other issues by myself. My pride can kill my spiritual walk. Ask yourself how are you doing in this garden of thorns? **************************************** We do the same things over and over even though we don’t want to. **************************************** In John 15:5 Jesus says apart from Him we can do nothing. I think it is impossible to live the Christian life with out our complete radical dependence on the Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Sprit. So this passage points out again that it can’t be done alone. We will have to choose whether we will move to numbing or escaping pain i.e. addictions and acting out which leads to death or dependence on the Lord, which leads to life. In the book of James chapter 1:2-4 we are told that we will not escape trials/temptation. But if we do stand up to them and make healthy choices that depend on the Lord for help we will receive a crown of life v.15. We need the Lord but we also need community/people to help us handle our thorns. We may have put the thorns in our life, but to be in recovery means I can’t do it alone I need the Lords and the Lords people to help me. I just want to make sure that no one thinks it’s just the Lord and me. God created community and gave us the church so we can heal and recover from the consequences of sin. This is done in fellowship with the body of Christ the church. **************************************** God created community and gave us the church so we can heal! **************************************** May we see our thorns, whatever they may be as a gift to grow closer to the risen Lord and experience His grace? Some action steps: 1. Admit we have them and identify them. 2. Talk with the Lord about them, we can ask Him to remove them but if they are there let’s see them as opportunity to deepen our dependence on Christ. 3. Share with others in a small group or support group setting as well as a close friend or pastor. 4. Allow for time with Gods grace to begin to strengthen and change your character you so you can respond in new healthy ways that lead to life and not death. 5. Prayer as a constant chat with the Lord and a constant connection to Him in your mind. 6. Clean out our garden where there are thorns. What do we watch on TV? Where do we go with our free time? Clean house. I wish you all a blessed Christmas and pray that the thorns in your life will drive you to the passion that brought Christ (Emanuel) on earth for us. Peace be with you, Victor This article is by Victor Tarassov, MS

Blessing of Brokenness

The Blessing of Brokenness By Victor Tarassov I would like to explore the concept of being broken to recover and obtain and maintain sobriety of any type or addiceion. Many people think they must maintain an image to be acceptable and never allow themselves to been seen as less than perfect. For the addict (any type) there has to be the facade that everything is ok or fine. But a simple look inside the heart reveals something quite different. Most of us are afraid to look there because there are so many wounds and truth be told we are broken. So we use our addictions to keep us from seeing or being in touch with our brokenness. **************************************** The Psalmist in Psalm 52:17 says: “the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” NIV **************************************** On the other hand what if we are posing that we are all just fine? Yet I do not think that that front will allow us to benefit in our desire to stay sober. There is a story that I think explains brokenness very well. There was a young priest who was about to lift the communion cup up and bless the cup. The cup was made of choice crystal and very perfect. Just when he lifted up the cup it slipped out of his hand and smashed on to the floor all broken pieces all over. He looked up at the senior priest thinking that he would be ridiculed and instead the senior priest said, “I never new there were so many beautiful pieces to reflect the light until the cup was broken. How marvelous and beautiful are all the pieces when the light shines on them!” It is the light that shines though our brokenness that is so beautiful. For that light is the Lord. What we fear is to be broken or be seen as broken but as the story illustrates it is in our brokenness and non-posing state that the true light of Christ can shine in and make our brokenness beautiful. The addict has to see her/his brokenness if they are to over- come one of the major obstacles in recovery. **************************************** George MacDonald says: ”Gather my broken fragments to a whole… Let mine be a merry, all-receiving heart, but make it a whole, with light in every part” **************************************** John Eldredge in Wild at Heart comments, “But you can’t do this at a distance; you can’t ask Christ to come into your wound while you remain far from it. You have to go there with him.” That being we are in pain and are broken. Its ok to be broken, it is in our brokenness that we can bring it to the Lord and have His touch and light heal and bring hope to our broken heart. I have resisted for years to allow my self to experience the pain of brokenness but this last year I experienced many things that suggested I was not in control of my life and that the world I lived in was broken including me. As long as I tried to hold on and make it work I would get depressed, tired, a bit moody and self absorbed in that I did not want people to see me in pain. Finally in May of 2002 my cup was smashed on the ground, I never thought that with so many pieces all over the place that order or hope would come. But yet to my surprise it was this brokenness that I believe God needed me and many of us to enter to show us how much He really loves us. After a very painful divorce, relocation, and new beginnings in a new place God used his church to show me love when I had nothing I could give. This was the place I believe that God wants to take all of us to show us just how much He loves us. It came down to me and my God. I have had friends support me and give me space to heal and grow. Then I received encouragement from pastors/minister and allowed my life to be touched by others. Then my own practice began to pick up, and finally after time, God even allowed me to meet the most beautiful woman I have ever met, Kathy, to spend time with. It has been a joy to be in relationship not afraid of the past, able to give love to her from a place of strength and not need. I have love that I can share with her and others because my brokenness allowed for God to fill me with Him. She and others have seen me for who I am and not what the wounds showed. My brokenness has allowed me to be made whole and beginning the healing, not by me, but the Lord. The very thing that I thought would destroy me and break me God has used to bless me. This is truly the best time I have been experiencing in my life. Even though there was a period of six months of deep pain, God has taken me and allowed me to experience brokenness and lose everything that I thought would give me peace and replace that with Him. Now He is even giving me the desires of my heart. He will to you too. May we not see our brokenness as a road block to healing and wholeness but as a door to enter to begin that wonderful journey where we experience the love that God has for all of us. May we allow him to heal our hearts. Heal and reflect His love. This article is by Victor Tarassov

Lessons in Longing

I have been longing for a custom made guitar for years. I remember when I was young I always thought why cant someone make a guitar that has a wider neck. Well I have been longing for a Flamenco guitar that would allow for my large hands to play comfortably on a wide guitar. I found some one who would make one for me and when I thought I was close to delivery to getting it I was so excited and finding it hard to wait. At the same time there was never any agreement that it would be done on a certain day just my thinking and expectation that it would be. Well its going to be longer then I thought and I found my self disappointed and sad yet for what reason. The reason was I thought with out checking in that it would be hear soon and yet I was never told that it would for certain be hear on a certain day. yet I was not detached or letting go of desire so I found my self disappointed. Its it good to desire yes I believe it is buy when there is an un known demand or expectations that goes un agreed upon I think we will experience disappointment but it is only self induced because we never checked in with our desire and expectations. How important is is to check in with others when we think something will happen when we place our desire and longings on others with out agreement we will only hurt ourselves. So you either need to clarify or let go of what you want. I forgot to clarify and let my desire rule my heart. I only failed myself today. What do you need to let go of or clarify?

The Ax's that do the work

Stage Hand by Wooji Juice

I was talking to Taz tonight and he shared this cool app with me for the iPhone that is called Stage Hand, it allows you to control you pages presentation from the iPhone and lets you hi-light text. See below for more information.

Your Keynote slides and notes, that is.

Use Stage Hand to control your Keynote presentations from your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Stage Hand also shows the notes for your current slide, for those moments when you need a quick reminder.

No more worries about getting index cards out-of-order. No more hunching over your laptop, or filling precious space in your travel bag with an expensive "clicker" and its "dongle".

After all, you have your iPhone/iPod with you anyway — you might as well put it to work.

Tilt it on its side and a miniature of the big screen is shown on your small screen. Draw your audience's attention with the Stage Hand highlighter: Tap anywhere on the screen to spotlight your slide, with a choice of graphics and colours.

Read on...

Note: Stage Hand requires:

Keynote '08, part of the Apple iWork suite
A Macintosh computer running Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard"
An iPhone or iPod Touch running OS 2.0
Stage Manager, a free download from this website

Who can be an artist?

I was thinking tonight who can be an artist? Are there different types of artists? Does one need to get paid and have a fan base, or is it someone who creates from the inside from a concept or feeling it to something that another can experience. Does it have to be bought wanted by another to be art. Well what I came up with is art is something that goes from an idea in the self and is created though, words, actions, creation of a pice of wood, wool, wine, and creates beauty in one form, at the same time it does not need to be beautiful to be art. Does one need to go to school to create art. Art maybe just what we create to express what is on the inside and communicates to others and the self. Just my thought tonight.

iPhone Update v2.0

Re: iPhone software 2.0 on Apple’s servers
Got it. I'm going to summarize that so that it's clear for any others that come along.

1. Download the file from the link in the article.

2. Do not unzip the file. If you are set to auto-unzip files when you download them, you can find the original download in your Trash with a .ipsw.zip extension.

3. Click to rename the file and remove the .zip from the end. Mac OS will ask if you want to change the extension to .ipsw. You do.

4. In iTunes, go to the Summary page for your iPhone.

5. Hold Option and click the Restore button. A file dialog box will appear, and you can choose the .ipsw file you downloaded earlier.

6. Click OK and the process begins.

Click the above iPhone title and it will bring you to the URL to downlaod
